Real Help from Someone Who Gets It

Dr. Doug Campbell is a registered psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with police, military, and other first responders. Having served in the military himself, Doug understands the unique pressures, culture, and sense of duty that come with serving others. He knows that asking for help isn’t easy — and that’s exactly why he’s made it his life’s work to make that step feel safe and straightforward.

Dr. Doug Campbell is a clinical psychologist who has been in practice since 2002, with extensive experience working with police officers, military members, veterans, and other first responders.

Dr. Campbell completed his doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Indiana State University, followed by a residency at the Detroit Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he worked with combat veterans experiencing a range of trauma-related and mental health concerns.

From 2002 to 2007, Dr. Campbell served as a psychologist and commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force, including deployment to the Middle East as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After completing his military service, he became a dual citizen and relocated to Toronto with his Canadian wife, establishing a private practice focused on trauma and operational stress injuries among veterans and first responders.

From 2019 to 2025, Dr. Campbell served as a staff psychologist with the Toronto Police Service (TPS), providing clinical services, consultation, and training for frontline officers in addition to specialized units. He worked extensively with members of the Public Order Unit and other operational teams, supporting psychological resilience and well-being. Dr. Campbell also contributed to modernized training initiatives emphasizing communication, de-escalation, and mental readiness. He has since returned to full-time private practice, continuing his commitment to supporting first responders, veterans, and others affected by trauma and cumulative stress.

Approachable. Experienced. Grounded.

Doug’s style is practical, down-to-earth, and rooted in respect. He values honesty, humour, and real connection over jargon or judgment. His office is a space where first responders can be themselves — no need to explain what the job is like, no need to filter yourself or worry about offending him. Being ex-military, Doug is familiar with the military and police sub-culture.

Assessment and Treatment Planning:

A Clear Plan, Grounded in Experience

Each person’s story is different, but the goal is the same — to find a practical path forward. Dr. Campbell begins with a focused assessment to understand your history, strengths, and current challenges. From there, he develops a clear treatment plan that fits your reality — whether that means short-term, targeted sessions or longer-term support for cumulative stress or trauma.

Recovery from PTSD and Operational Stress

Helping first responders recover from what the job leaves behind.

Years of service will leave lasting effects — images that won’t fade, sleep that won’t settle, tension that won’t release; or changes in personal relationships. Dr. Campbell provides effective, evidence-based treatment for PTSD and operational stress injuries. His approach helps first responders process what they’ve experienced, reduce intrusive memories, and regain a sense of calm and control. Techniques such as EMDR are used when appropriate to support long-term recovery and resilience.

Addressing Anxiety, Depression & Burnout:

Strength for the Long Haul

The demands of policing and public service can take a toll on focus, motivation, and emotional balance. Dr. Campbell helps clients manage the weight of chronic stress, fatigue, and low mood that often follow years of service. Treatment emphasizes building sustainable coping strategies, restoring sleep and concentration, and reconnecting with the parts of life that matter most.

Your Questions, Answered

  • The first appointment is usually two hours so there’s time to understand your background, the challenges you’re facing, and what you’d like to achieve. For many first responders, that extra time helps begin talking about experiences that have often been carried quietly for years. Most insurance plans cover this session in full as a standard psychological assessment.

If you prefer to start with a one-hour appointment instead, that option is always available as well.

  • First responders face unique stressors: shift work, exposure to trauma, and the culture of “just push through it.” Doug understands that context from years of working with police and military members, so therapy is direct, respectful, and tailored to operational realities — not textbook scenarios.

  • Everything discussed in therapy is confidential. Your information is never shared with your employer, organization, or anyone else without your explicit consent (except where required by law for safety reasons).

  • A primary concern with most police officers is maintaining a sense of personal control. In treatment, you stay in control of what you share and when. Doug uses approaches like EMDR and trauma-focused therapy that don’t always require describing events in detail. The focus is on helping your nervous system settle and reducing distress. Although research and clinical experience shows that exploring operational experiences is helpful, YOU are in control of the situation. Working with a psychologist means close collaboration, not taking orders from your treatment provider.

  • Psychological services are not covered by OHIP. However, first-responder benefit plans usually include extended health coverage for psychological services provided by a registered psychologist. If you’re not sure what your plan includes, Doug would be happy to review it with you or help you find out.

If your insurance only reimburses part of the session fee, Doug will adjust his rate whenever possible so that you’re not out-of-pocket for your care. This approach reflects his commitment to supporting first responders and ensuring access to quality care without financial strain.

  • Yes! Dr. Campbell can direct-bill certain insurers, such as Sun Life and Green Shield, when your plan allows it. Direct billing is completely optional — you’re also welcome to handle reimbursement yourself if you prefer.

You Don’t Have to Carry it Alone.
